With any luck, this blog post doesn’t apply to you. If it does, you might be interested to know that you’re not the only one who feels this way. Stats from a couple of years ago claim that only 17% of British workers claim to ‘love’ their job. In addition to this, over half of full time employees were looking for a new job with better pay. If the majority of the workforce aren’t happy in their job then why not just change what you do?

The Comfort of Familiarity

Humans are wired to seek stability, even at the cost of happiness. A job, no matter how unfulfilling, provides a routine, a regular and reliable paycheck, and a sense of security. The fear of the unknown—new colleagues, new challenges, or even failure—can make staying in place feel like the safer option. But is comfort worth the cost of long-term dissatisfaction?

The Sunk Cost Fallacy

Ever told yourself, “I’ve spent years in this career, I can’t just walk away now”? That’s the sunk cost fallacy at work. We tend to believe that past investments—time, effort, education—must dictate our future choices. But clinging to something just because of what we’ve already given up can keep us stuck in cycles that no longer serve us.

Fear of Change and Self-Doubt

Your inner dialogue can be your worst enemy; “What if you fail? What if you’re not good enough? What if it’s worse somewhere else?” These thoughts create a mental prison, convincing us that we’re better off enduring the present than risking an uncertain future. But growth never happens inside our comfort zone! What if change is exactly what you need?

Societal and Financial Pressures

We often equate career stability with success. Family expectations, financial responsibilities, and societal norms can often make quitting feel irresponsible or even selfish. But the flip side is staying in a job that potentially drains you emotionally and mentally. This has its own costs which can impact on your well-being, relationships, and overall quality of life.

The Power of Mindset Shifts

So what’s the first step to breaking free? A shift in mindset is essential. All of the women who’ve talked on my Living Life Differently podcast mention a pivotal moment in their lives where their mindset shifted. They reached a point of no return. Instead of asking yourself “What if I fail?”, ask “What if I thrive?” Instead of “I can’t leave this job”, try “I deserve better than this.” The key to a fulfilling career or lifestyle isn’t just about escaping a bad job—it’s about believing you’re capable of something more. Once you’ve got that belief, there’s no stopping you.
